''RUMS'' (Royal Free, University College and Middlesex medical students) is the body which represents students at UCL Medical School following the merger of three of London's most famous medical schools in 1998. RUMSHC fields 6 teams (all of which except the newly formed women's 3s play in BUCS and LUSL leagues) and has enjoyed repeated success over the last few years. The club plays in the traditional blue and yellow colours of RUMS. The club is run as 2 - a Men's and a Women's club - that train separately yet socialise together, and cumulatively are one of the largest sports societies in RUMS with over 100 members. They have each earned reputations for their sporting ability in their own right and the Hockey Club is the only sports society in the history of RUMS to have fielded teams in the London Varsity played between UCL-King's. Both currently use Barnes Bridge as their home pitch, colloquially termed 'Fortress Barnes' due to their strong home record. Many RUMSHC players also play for the United Hospitals Hockey team.〔United Hospitals〕 ==History== The club's history dates back to the founding of Middlesex medical school in 1746, one of the 4 medical schools that would eventually merge to become RUMS. At this point Field Hockey as a sport was yet to be created, and the club was a Shinty Club. The club had strong links with what was then Teddington Cricket Club, who are believed to have come to the shinty club to discuss opportunities to develop a winter sport for their cricket players; a sport that later became known as field hockey. As such, RUMS hockey club are regarded in many circles as being instrumental in the development of the modern rules of the game.
